Abstract: The main objective of this research was to identify the dynamic characteristics of tall buildings. In this research, existing 6-story Engineering faculty building and proposed 14-story new engineering faculty building of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) were analyzed using finite element method to identify their dynamic characteristics. Natural frequency of the cantilever beam from theoretical analysis and from finite element analysis had a 0.23% difference, validating the use of finite element method. The natural frequencies of 6 and 14 story buildings were found to be 0.88 and 0.74 Hz, respectively for a 10×10 m mesh size. Critical mode shapes of the two buildings also have been identified through the Modal analysis.
