Assistant Zone – Homeschooling Assistance System based on Natural Language Processing
    (IEEE, 2022-12-09) Premendran, K; Bopearachchi, S.B.D.D.; Senevirathna, S.D.M.; Giridaran, S; Archchana, K; Ganegoda, D; Thelijjagoda, S
As a developing country, most people give their highest priority to education. When focusing on building an e-learning platform to improve the knowledge of students and teacher-student interactivity, the pandemic season can be mentioned as the main blocker which highly impacted the education field. Not only by considering the pandemic situation but also by addressing the concerns when it comes to teacher and student evaluation and psychological levels of students who are undergoing different difficulties, the “Home Schooling Assistance System” (Assistant Zone) has been introduced as a solution. The Assistant Zone has been initiated with three unique features which are valuable for both students and teachers. This system analyzes the strengths, weaknesses and evaluates the student performance, suggests study materials to improve themselves, provides solutions to the problems faced by the students, teachers, and parents and measures the performance of teachers based on their students, and recommends learning materials for the low-performing teachers. The Assistant Zone fulfills the targeted problems and introduces the above-mentioned three unique features with the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) such as the BERT algorithm and Machine Learning models such as the Recurrent Neural Network, Forward Neural Network, and Gaussian Model.

Cocopal - A Deep Learning Based Intelligent System to Certify and Standardize the Quality of Coconut Based Products
    (IEEE, 2022-12-09) Gunawardana, K.H.R.; Deshan, M.P.N.; Hemachandra, M.G.S.P.; Ganegoda, D; Hettiarachchi, N. M; Weerasinghe, L
The procedure of certifying and standardizing the quality of the coconut-based products is done manually in Sri Lanka at precent. It is a time consuming and labor-intensive task and is conducted by experts. In most cases, the quality is decided solely by visual inspections by buyers and suppliers, with no scientific basis. The paper reports the capacity of bringing modern technology solutions such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Image Processing (IP), and decentralized storage to aid in the certification and standardization of the quality of raw materials. Results showed that the accuracy of the proposed system is in the 86% to 90% range and showed that this technique could beimproved and used as an alternative to manual techniques.

Innovative use of Collaborative Teaching in Conducting a Large Scale Online Synchronous Fresher’s Programming Course
    (IEEE, 2021-04-21) Kodagoda, N; Gamage, A; Suriyawansa, K; Jayasinghe, B; Rupasinghe, S; Ganegoda, D; Jayalath, T; Kurrupu, A
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced educationist to come up with innovative solutions in delivering, engaging synchronous online academic modules. An innovative collaborative teaching approach was utilized in delivering programming concepts for freshers. A team of six academics functioned as a resource panel in delivering synchronous online lecture content. These interactive sessions were led by a moderator inquiring the resource panel on topics related to the content of the lecture. This was done in the same spirit on how a panel discussion would be conducted led by a moderator in a conference. Microsoft Teams Live was used in the delivery of the content to an audience of up to 800 students. Delivering a freshers programming course is known to be challenging in face- to-face delivery. A collaborative programming environment was used to engage students in live coding activities during the lectures. Students had opportunities to interact with the resource panel through quizzes, QA and through coding related activities. These lectures also introduced the innovative use of QR codes to get students engagement through a mobile device for the interactive sessions. Results based on a survey shared among the participated students, confirmed the collaborative teaching approach in conducting webinar was more effective over a traditional webinar that is conducted by one person. Interactive programming environment (Repl.it) allowed the resource personal to give feedback on the programs submitted by the students during synchronous sessions conducted. The best practices used in delivering this course can be easily adopted in delivering highly engaging online lectures for other courses.

Mobile-based Assistive Tool to Identify & Learn Medicinal Herbs
    (IEEE, 2020-12-10) Senevirathne, L. P. D. S; Pathirana, D. P. D. S; Silva, A. L; Dissanayaka, M. G. S. R; Nawinna, D. P; Ganegoda, D
Sri Lanka is recognized and valued globally due to its rich heritage of tropical plants, herbs and trees. A need for the valuation of valuable herbs are identified among both Sri Lankans as well as tourists. This paper brings forth a solution in distinguishing medicinal herbs through leaves and flowers using deep learning and image processing algorithms via a mobile application. The proposed mobile application identifies a flower and leaf by its morphological features, such as shape, color, texture. The perspective is to achieve highest accuracy for plant identification using image processing. The proposed model revealed an accuracy of 92.5% in the classification of leaves and flowers. Accuracy of 6 different plants are identified using this method. This application also provides Sinhala virtual assistant which enables user to search herbs using the name, which is popular among people, to obtain information about herbs. The main outcome of the virtual assistant of the research is to develop an information retrieval method on medicinal herbs in a more accurate, easy and efficient way. In addition. this application also provides 3D structure of the selected medicinal herb in augmented reality (AR).

Smart Teacher - An AI-Based Self-Learning Platform for Grade 10 ICT Students
    (IEEE, 2022-07-18) Jathushan, V.; Senthujan, B.; Ajiharan, B.; Kasthury, M.; Gamage, A; Ganegoda, D
E-learning is a method of learning that uses electronic resources but is based on institutionalized education. While education can take place in or outside of the classroom, E-learning relies heavily on computers and the Internet. The smart Teacher is a self-learning platform for ICT students that is powered by artificial intelligence. The study's purpose is to enhance teaching and learning functions by allowing for the creation and storage of learning materials, as well as their availability and accessibility. We concentrated our research on the Grade 10 ICT topic. We created a web application that Grade 10 students can use to self- We created a web application that Grade 10 students can use to self-teach and self-assess their ICT skills, and it will be free. It will result in a higher pass rate for fundamental ICT knowledge.Students can ask questions on the main page (Image). We assigned ratings to the responses provided by different users and automatically ordered the responses based on the ratings. We'll offer real-time cautions about unrelated questions. Simultaneously, we added a chatbot that will provide related site recommendations as well as real-time website instructions. It will listen to the students' queries (voice or sound) and then propose relevant questions in text form that the students can utilize.

Thuryalankara: Artificial Intelligence Based Audio Plugin For Sri Lankan Percussion Instruments
    (IEEE, 2021-12-01) Fernando, P. D. C; Fernando, B. A. N; Wanaguru, I. U; Perera, M. A. P. A; Buddhika, T; Kodagoda, N; Ganegoda, D
Sri Lankan music is yet to prove its musical prowess by incorporating artificial intelligence tools, therefore, this research introduces a novel invention, an automated audio plugin for music producers, so the process of creating, mixing, mastering, and producing music is easier. To achieve this, the research introduces a Variational AutoEncoder (VAE) machine learning model to create and generate music, an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can automate the mastering process. This research also introduces an innovative component, a virtual instrumentation tool using MIDI technology for the Sri Lankan percussion instruments that allow users to play the instrument virtually using a MIDI keyboard, and alongside it, a preset beat generator that automatically maintain tempo consistency. Thuryalankara was able to receive a collective average of 80% accuracy rate exceeding the predicted accuracy rate of 65% from the software benchmarking test and the physical survey conducted with music producers. Finally, with the inclusion of powerful tools like this, the ultimate objective of this research is to take the Sri Lankan instruments to the international level where any producer from little to plenty experience is able to use this plugin to enhance their musical production.
