Design of a Framework for Professional Development Programs for Teachers in the Use of Interactive Touch Screen
(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences (FHS) of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) Malabe, 2020-12-01) Perera, K.G.S.K.; Wijesundara, M.; Siriwardhena, I.
Interactive Touch Screens (ITSs) are distributed in selected schools in Sri Lanka. Although, in these schools, selected teachers are trained on the use of the ITS, comprehensive training on the instructional strategies of ITS is yet to be provided. The objective of the study was to design and develop a framework for professional development programme (PDP) for teachers on the use of ITS. The sample of 31 teachers of an educational zone in the Colombo district was selected to test the methodology. Instruments for quantitative data collection were six scales and to collect qualitative data open-ended questions were used. Design Based Research (DBR) approach was made to evaluate the new methodology. DBR approach is characterized by analysis of the problem domain, design of the solution (intervention), iterative cycles of testing and refining the solution and finally reflecting on the whole process to arrive at design principles and inventing the solution. Intervention of this study was in terms of two professional development programmes on the integration of ITS in instruction. The results of the first intervention are presented in this paper. Analysis of data formed the feedback to design the revised PDP. The results of the study are the feedback to the proposed revisions to the next PDP. The feedback was to increase the time allocation of the PDP, provide more hands-on experience, demonstrate ITS-based instructional strategies related to different subject areas and conduct separate PDPs for non-ICT teachers.

The aim of this study was to design a framework for professional development programmes for teachers in the use of Interactive Touch Screen (ITS). At present ITSs are distributed in selected schools in Sri Lanka. Although, in these schools, selected teachers are trained on the use of the ITS, comprehensive training on the instructional strategies of ITS is yet to be provided. The objectives of the study were (1) Analyse the current usage of ITS of teachers in the school system, (2) Design and develop a professional development program (PDP) for teachers on the use of ITS, (3) Implement the PDP and evaluate the effect on the teachers and (4) Reflect on the evaluation results to upgrade the current PDP to conduct the following PDP. The sample was a total of 31 teachers of an educational zone in the Colombo district. Instruments for quantitative data collection were six scales and open-ended questions were used to collect qualitative data. Design Based Research (DBR) approach was made in this study in which both quantitative and qualitative data were collected in the research process. Proposed revisions were to increase the time allocation of the PDP, provide more hands-on experience, demonstrate ITS-based instructional strategies related to different subject areas and conduct separate PDPs for non-ICT teachers.

The Effect of ICT-Based Multimedia Use in Activities on Science Students’ Achievement and Motivation in Learning
(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2023-11-01) Perera, K.G.S.K.; Waidyathilaka, M.A.L.W
It is evident from the research in education that integration of ICT-based multimedia in the learning process could improve students’ achievement and enhance motivation to learn. The objectives of this research were to investigate the effect of ICT-based multimedia integration in classroom activities on students’ achievement and their motivation to learn as against the effect of the use of traditional methods in students’ activities. The design of the research was quasi-experimental in which 50 grade 7 students of a private school participated in this study. Two intact groups of 25 students were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. Same pre-test was administered to both groups. Both groups were taught the same science lesson and students of the experimental group were assigned to carry out an activity using ICT-based multimedia and those in the control group carried out the same activity using papers and colours. At the end of the activity the same pre-test was conducted as the post-test on both groups. Motivational scale based on the Keller’s ARCS model of motivation was administered on the experimental group to study the degree of motivation to use ICT-based multimedia to carry out activities. However, results indicated that there was no significant difference in achievement between students who did activities with ICT-based multimedia and those who completed activities using papers and paints. Nevertheless, the motivation to use ICT-based multimedia in activities by the students who were engaged in activities of ICT-based multimedia was found to be high.

Effectiveness Of Multimedia Projector-Based Instructional Methods In Enhancing Students’ Learning Of Science
(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2023-11-01) Madushani, U.V.S; Perera, K.G.S.K.
Multimedia-based instructional strategies play an important role in enhancing students’ performance as well as students’ motivation towards the learning of science. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of multimedia projectors in enhancing students’ learning of science and students’ motivation towards multimedia in learning vs traditional chalk-and-board method. A quasi-experimental research design was used to investigate the performance and motivational effect of the usage of multimedia projector. A convenient sample of 30 students in grade eight was used in this study. The experimental group of 15 students were taught using a multimedia projector and the control group of 15 students were taught the same science lessons using traditional chalk and board method. Students’ performance was evaluated using a pretest and a post-test. The motivational scale based on the Keller’s ARCS model of motivation was administered on the experimental group to study the degree of motivation displayed in the use of the multimedia projector for instruction. The findings of this study supported the hypothesis that the use of multimedia-based instruction is more effective than the traditional methods in students’ learning of science. Further, it was found that the students’ motivation was also high in the use of the multimedia projector to teach science.
