Publication Open Access A Study of the Relationship Between the Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment of Academic Staff in Private Higher Education Institutes in Sri Lanka(2015) Dissanayake, L. S; De Silva, NAs a developing country in Asian region, Sri Lankan higher education sector consists with government universities, private higher education institutes and semi-government universities. Irrespective of the sector, higher education institutes strongly believe about quality of their degree programmes. Higher quality of education can be achieved only by having a academic staff who are motivated, committed and satisfied to what they do. It is the usual perception that when the staff is committed to what they do, it will positively impact on their job performance, service quality and the success of the organization. Hence, it is vital to identify the importance of employees’ organizational commitment achieved through job satisfaction in private higher education sector in Sri Lanka. Therefore the primary objective of this study is to study the relationship between the job Satisfaction and organizational commitment of academic staff in private higher education institutes in Sri Lanka. The independent variable is job satisfaction and the dependent variable was organizational commitment. . This study utilized a questionnaire to collect the data which needed to achieve the research objectives. Also researchers have used standard questionnaires to measure job satisfaction which is known as Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale and organizational commitment was measured through Allen and Mayer Organizational Commitment Scale. Current study was conducted in a natural setting where the work proceeds normally. No any artificial or contrived setting was created where none of the variables were controlled by the researchers in this study. The data was collected from the individual lecturers of five reputed academic institutions in Colombo District and unit of analysis of this study is individual.Publication Open Access GLASS CEILING AND WOMEN CAREER BLOOMING IN SRI LANKAN ACADEMIC SECTOR; A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR FUTURE RESEARCH(Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, 2019-10-29) Madawala, R. YGlass ceiling still exists in employment of women since the majority of female employees are still intensive in low level earnings and low level positions. Present study entirely focuses on the central problem of the effects of Glass Ceiling which has an adverse impact on career blooming of female in Sri Lankan Academic Sector. Research was conducted to determine the effect of Glass Ceiling on women career blooming for academic employees who are working in both private and state universities. Narrow it down to discover the impact of Educational Factors, Organizational Factors, Individual Factors and Family Factors on Women Career Blooming. The research comprises of the dependent variable that is women career blooming whereas the independent variable is the glass ceiling. Conceptual framework of the study displays that glass ceiling factors do effect to the dependent variable of career blooming and this was developed completely based on the information of literature review. In order to build the conceptual framework, the researchers referred various research articles in western and Asian context.Publication Open Access A Study of Essential Competencies and Skills of HR Managers in Sri Lanka(www.absronline.org/journals, 2016-11) Weerarathna, R. S; Pintoe, ASkills and competencies are vital assets for any individual in order to carry out the tasks and duties in triumphant manner. In today’s globalized and exigent business environment Human Resources (HR) managers need apposite skills and competencies to thrive in business organizations. Even though skills and competencies are important to HR managers; researchers have identified that an empirical gap is existing in Sri Lanka; as Sri Lankan researchers have not conducted the researches in the area of competencies and skills of HR Managers job which consists with Senior Manager (HR), HR Manager, Group HR Manager, Group HR and Administration Manager and HR Manager (Specialized HR Function). The research question of this exploratory study is what are the skills and competencies needed or expected by the organizations in Sri Lanka for HR Managers? There are two research objectives in this current study, mainly; to identify the skills and competencies needed or expected from HR Managers by the Sri Lankan Organization and to give an insight on theoretical perspective for the skills and competencies needed for key HR Managers. To achieve those two research objectives, researchers used HR job advertisements appeared in Sunday Observer Newspaper, Topjobs website for the period of November 2015 to November 2016 of time. The current research was carried out in non-contrived setting and the time horizon of the study is longitudinal under minimal interference of the researchers’. The findings of this exploratory study proved that communication skills, interpersonal skills, computer Literacy, leadership skills and negotiation skills were identified as most expected skills for HR Managers in Sri Lankan Organizations. As per the second major finding of this study researchers found that human skills from three managerial skills introduced by Robert. L. Katz are mostly expected skills by the Sri Lankan organizations. The findings of this study are useful to current HR Managerial job holders, future HR Managerial job seekers, teachers, university lecturers and educational policy makers.Publication Open Access The effects of employee related factors on organizational restructuring: A case study in apparel manufacturing company in Sri Lanka(researchgate.net, 2016-09) Weerarathna, R. With the acceptance of that fact, researchers have selected apparel manufacturing company in Sri Lanka which has undergone major organizational restructuring. This case study focuses on the effects of employee related factors on organizational restructuring. Case study method was adopted by the researchers and the study was developed by identifying an issue which occurred in a group of companies that manufacture children’s garments for both local market and overseas market. The case has been analyzed through work life balance of employees, reactions from workforce generations and organizational restructuring which are important topics of Organization Behavior, Change Management and Human Resource Management.Publication Open Access The effect of gender on career progression: A conceptual model(Canadian Center of Science and Education, 2019-05-31) Weerarathna, R. S; Hapurugala, SThis paper attempts to develop a conceptual model to test the effect of gender on career progression. In the Sri Lankan context, there is a perception that there is difference between female oriented jobs and male oriented jobs. When economic statistics and company related details are considered, it can be surmised that there is an impact of gender on career progression. This research paper proposes definitions for variables related to career progression and career advancement in organizations. Based on these definitions and on an extensive literature survey, the current researchers will develop a conceptual framework to test the effect of gender on career progression.Publication Open Access A Study of the Relationship between Organizational Conflicts & Employees’ Intention to Leave with Special Reference to Staff Assistants in ABC Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka(Global Journals Inc, 2017-06-29) Weerarathna, R. SMajor HR objective of any organization is to maintain or retain employees in the organization. In other words, all organization expects to minimize the employee turnover to best possible level. This study mainly focused about the practical issue of employee turnover and organizational conflicts of ABC Merchant Bank. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between organizational conflicts and employees’ intention to leave with special reference to staff assistants of ABC Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka. This research study is significant to Sri Lankan context as there are fewer studies have been conducted in this field. In order to fill that gap while finding the solutions to practical issue present study was conducted at ABC Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka PLC .The research analysis was based on the information collected from 102 staff assistant which were selected through simple random sampling.Publication Open Access Research Gaps in Organizational Conflicts: Future Research Perspectives(researchgate.net, 2017-11-29) Weerarathna, R. SThe main objective of this research study was to identify the research gaps in organizational conflicts. Researcher has utilized desk research study to identify three research gaps in organizational conflicts. First research gap can be labeled as there is less empirical evidence on the relationship between organizational conflicts in Sri Lankan and Asian context. Second research gap in this article is known as more studies to analyze the links between organizational conflicts and other affective variables. Third research gap is requirement for more longitudinal studies on organizational conflicts. S; Jayarathna, D. Y; Pintoe, ARapid industrialization and globalization are major causes for environment abuses in modern world. In present, most of the companies are focused about environment friendly concepts/ green behavior and sustainability to overcome from environment pollution. This study aims to identify employee green behavior in manufacturing sector and service sector of Sri Lanka. Researchers have used descriptive study to achieve the research objective. Research data were collected by one hundred seventy (170) respondents from manufacturing sector organizations and service sector organizations by using convenience sampling. Self-administered questionnaire was distributed among the respondents which was developed by using organizational citizenship behavior for the environment scale by Boiral and Paille (2012). The findings of this study proved that respondents from manufacturing sector are greener than respondents from service sector.Publication Open Access The Relationship between Internship Programs and Employability: With Special Reference to BBA Graduates of Non State University of Sri Lanka(Human Resource Management Academic Research Society (HRMARS), 2018-12) Rajapakshe, W; Meththananda, K. SInternship program is a strategic initiative which has been implemented by tertiary education institutes to improve the employability of graduates as the graduates’ unemployment has become a International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences critical issue especially in the Sri Lankan context. This study examines the relationship between internship programs and graduates’ employability with the perspective of Business Management graduates who have recently passed out from the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. The paper has revealed that internship programs have a strong positive relationship with graduates’ employability. Further the paper reveals that technical skills which they have gained through internship programs have the strongest relationship with their employability, therefore their perception is that technical skills have the most impact towards their employability. Also the paper presents that they agree that their intention for lifelong learning has been improved by internship programs.
