Anglo Saxon English: A Linguistic Overview
    (Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2024-12-04) Karunanayaka, K. N. C. P.; Amaraweera, S; Wickremasinghe, S.S
Originated in England, English language is a West Germanic language that belongs to the Indo-European language family. From its introducti on to the Briti sh Isles, the tremendous changes it experienced shaped and developed it into the current lingua franca. In order for English to become a dominant and signifi cant language as it is now, it has gone through a development marked by signifi cant historical events and cultural exchanges. This study analyses Anglo Saxon English/Old English which is considered as the foundati on of Englishes that are spoken and studied today. The key area that is analysed in this study includes the morphological features of Anglo Saxon English along with its comparison to the Modern English translati on. Textual comparison is used for this purpose focusing on the historical poem: Caedmon’s Hymn. Furthermore, this research underscores how Old English morphology laid the groundwork for modern grammati cal structures. The study reveals a gradual simplifi cati on of infl ecti ons over ti me, which led to a more streamlined syntax. Understanding these historical transformati ons enhances our appreciati on of the language’s resilience and adaptability. The fi ndings of this study emphasise the signifi cance of historical linguisti c evoluti on in shaping English, highlighti ng the enduring impact of its Anglo-Saxon roots on contemporary language.

A Needs Analysis in Second Language Teaching (English Language): A Study on Grade 10,11 Students in the Sri Jayawardenapura Educational Zone
(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2023-11-01) Boteju, T; Rathnasena, U
The purpose of this study is to investigate the needs of English language learners in grades 10 and 11 who attend schools in the Colombo area specifically within the Sri Jayewardenepura Educational Zone. Statistics demonstrate that a significant number of students failed the Ordinary Level English paper, despite evaluations and curriculum reforms undertaken by the government. A thorough needs analysis was required to determine the causes and provide a solution to this situation. The objectives of this study are to investigate the purpose of students learning English as a second language, to conduct a needs analysis to critically analyze the needs, necessities, and lacks in grade 10, 11 students in Colombo District, and to suggest and recommend ideas to incorporate needs analysis findings. For this mixed-method study, information is collected using questionnaires and interviews, and the quantitative data is represented through graphs and tables, while the qualitative data is shown through a theme-based analysis. Based on the outcomes of this study, it is anticipated that the current curriculum will undergo modifications and adjustments to align with the authentic needs and requirements of students, thereby ultimately achieving a high level of student proficiency.

English Language Trainer for Non-Native Speakers using Audio Signal Processing, Reinforcement Learning, and Deep Learning
    (IEEE, 2021-12-02) Jeewantha, H. C. R.; Gajasinghe, A. N; Rajapaksha, T. N; Naidabadu, N. I; Kasthurirathna, D.; Karunasena, A.
Lack of basic proficiency and confidence in writing and speaking in English is one of the major social problems faced by most non-native English speakers. Although the general adult literacy rate in Sri Lanka is above average by world standards, the English literacy rate is just 22% among the Sri Lankan adult population. Many individuals face setbacks in achieving their career and academic goals due to these language barriers. In a world where English has become a compulsory requirement to pursue higher education, career development, and performing day-to-day activities, "English Buddy" is a software solution developed to enhance the English learning experience of individuals in a more personalized and innovative way. The system provides an all-in-one solution while filling major research and market gaps in existing solutions in the e-learning domain. The system consists of a personalized learning environment, automated pronunciation error detection system, automated essay evaluation process, automated descriptive answer evaluation component based on semantic similarity, and real-time course content rating system. English Buddy is implemented using state-of-the-art technologies such as Audio Signal Processing, Reinforcement Learning, Deep Learning, and NLP. The LSTM, Sentiment Analysis, and Siamese network models have gained accuracy scores of 0.93, 0.92, and 0.81 respectively. Further, the UAT results proved that the personalized recommendations and pronunciation error detection processes are accurate and reliable. This research has been able to overcome the limitations of most existing solutions that follow traditional approaches and provide better results compared to the recent studies in the e-learning research domain.

    Sinhala to english language translator
    (IEEE, 2008-12-12) De Silva, D; Alahakoon, A; Udayangani, I; Kumara, V; Kolonnage, D; Perera, H; Thelijjagoda, S
This paper describes a machine translation system that is capable of translating a grammatically correct Sinhala sentence in to its corresponding English sentence. This is the first Sinhala to English machine translation system, which comes with features such as an inbuilt keyboard, an inbuilt dictionary, an integrated word processor based on Unicode fonts, a grammar tool, a Sinhalese grammar checker, an add word tool, and a debugging tool. With the expansion of the world, English has become an important language that people should learn, as the majority of the worldwide population understand and carry out their day-to-day work in English. In addressing this need, we thought of taking up the challenge of building, a Sinhala to English language translator. To build this system, we used the transfer-based machine translation approach, which is a rule-based approach. At present, the system has achieved a success rate of 75% with a corpus of 150 sentences.
