Publication Open Access The Moderating Effect of Gender on the Predictive Role of Self-Esteem in Problematic Facebook Usage: A Quantitative Exploration among Undergraduates from Universities in the Colombo District, Sri Lanka(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2024-12-04) Navodya,N.A.K.A.H.; Fernando,TThe advancement of technology has transformed face-to-face communicati on by transferring interacti ons to virtual spaces such as Facebook, which are heavily used by undergraduates and might be negati ve to their mental health. The present quanti tati ve study examined the predicti ve role of self-esteem in the problemati c use of Facebook among undergraduates from universiti es in the Colombo District, Sri Lanka, and how gender moderates the connecti on. The study was conducted using a cross-secti onal design, and an online survey with 372 undergraduates. Bergen’s Facebook addicti on scale was used to measure the outcome variable, problemati c usage of Facebook, while the Rosenberg self-esteem scale was used to test the predictor variable, self-esteem. In the analysis, gender was evaluated as a moderator variable. Data was analyzed using Simple linear regression and logisti c regression analysis via SPSS and the Process Macro tool. Every phase of the research process included a careful integrati on of ethical considerati ons. Results show that higher self-esteem is associated with higher problemati c Facebook uti lizati on; however, this relati onship is stati sti cally signifi cant (F (1, 370) = 26.230, p<.05), and it only accounts for a small percentage of the variance (R² =.066) in problemati c use of Facebook among young individuals in Sri Lanka with no gender-based moderati on. A variety of psychosocial factors signifi cantly infl uence the selfesteem and problemati c usage of Facebook of young individuals in Sri Lanka, and this effect is consistent for both gender categories, male and female. More research on the psychological and environmental problems linked to youth utilization of social media is desperately needed in Sri Lanka.Publication Open Access Factors Predicting Academic Procrastination with Special Reference to Self-esteem, Self-efficacy, and Stress Among Undergraduates in the Western Province of Sri Lanka(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2023-11-01) Puhulwella Hewage, K; Ponnamperuma, LAll universities enroll new students each year, however, not every enrolled student graduates from the University before completing the degree program. Academic procrastination is identified as one of the major reasons affecting academic performance and several factors such as stress, self-esteem, and self-efficacy may contribute to an individual engaging in procrastination. This study aimed to evaluate the factors associated with academic procrastination. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among conveniently selected 150 undergraduates (Using the Daniel and Cross formula). A pretested self-administered questionnaire was shared as a Google form link with the ethical approval obtained from the Ethics Review Committee of Kaatsu International University. The data were collected using validated scales such as the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, the Generalized Self-efficacy Scale, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, and the Academic Procrastination Scale. Most of the participants were females (n=93, 62%), and they were 18-24 years old. The results showed that self-efficacy and self-esteem are a positive significant predictor of academic procrastination (β=.280, P<0.001) and (β=.187, P<0.001) respectively, stress is a negative significant predictor (β=-.370, P<0.001) of Academic procrastination. The results highlighted that self-esteem, self-efficacy, and stress are predictors of academic procrastination. The study findings have a theoretical and practical contribution to academic institutions and policymakers for improving academic success.Publication Embargo Perceptions of People with Mental Disorders about Their Mental Health Condition; An Exploratory Study(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2022-09-15) Wimaladhamma, KThis exploratory study was conducted to explore how people who have been diagnosed with mental disorders perceive their mental health condition, and their descriptions of lived experience of it. It also explored how their mental health condition might influence how they perceive themselves, their relationships, and how they engage the world around them through their activities. Sixteen participants (16) with a diagnosis of a mental disorder were the sample. The participants of the study were taking medication for the diagnosed mental disorder from a period of a minimum of six (06) months up to fortyseven (47) years. The data were collected at the Psychiatric Clinic, the General Hospital (Teaching), Kandy. The data were interpreted using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). It was identified that all the participants defined and understood mental health and mental illness through their lived experiences of mental illness. It was also identified that most of the participants experience some element of unhappiness or dissatisfaction because of their mental illness. However, the participants' positive self-esteem has played an important role in adjusting to the identity with the mental illness. The participants also valued the physical and psychological support they receive from their family members and others when they deal with their mental illness. Emotional support was highly valued by almost all the participants. It is expected that the generated knowledge of this research would help mental health professionals to work with families to construct an enabling view of the person with the illness and move away from treating them as helpless and irresponsible.
