Bank Notes Recognition Device for Sri Lankan Vision Impaired Community
    (IEEE, 2013-04) Wickramasinghe, K; De Silva, D
According to government and central bank rules and regulations of Sri Lanka, the bank notes must be changed once a pre-determined period of time. This process had been initiated recently on the Sri Lankan bank note system and had been changed into an array of new bank notes. The bank notes have been designed to the international standard and unlike the old system of notes, apart from the visual differences they are only five millimeters (5mm) longer or shorter from one another. This created a considerable problem to the visually handicapped people in the country because they have been used to identify the old notes by touch. The money detector is a device that has been developed to aid the blind in recognizing the new array of bank notes. The low cost portable device identifies the bank note in two different detection methods simultaneously and gives the user an audible feedback as to what the note is.

    (IEEE, 2022-12-26) Kularatne, B.M.U.S.; Basnayake, B.M.J.N.; Sathmini, P.D.L.A.M.; Sewwandi, G.V.U; Rajapaksha, S; De Silva, D
The robotic concept is used for several tasks to easier human day-to-day tasks. There are various recreational studies have been done on the elderly people’s care system. In this study, the system can identify the elderly people’s emotional status using thermal image processing that eliminates the halo effect issue in thermal images using a single discriminator Cycle-GAN model, serving medicine to elderly people by moving towards the elderly person while avoiding obstacles using point to point algorithm and obstacle avoidance and identify the semantic analysis by using web ontology based language. The integrated system is evaluated using the Gazebo simulator because the cost is lower than implementing the features in a real robot.

Integrating industrial technologies, tools and practices to the IT curriculum: an innovative course with .NET and java platforms
    (acm.org, 2005-10-20) Athauda, R; Kodagoda, N; Wickramaratne, J; Sumathipala, P; Rupasinghe, L; Edirisighe, A; Gamage, A; De Silva, D
Exposure to state-of-art industry technologies, tools and practices by students provide CS/IT graduates highly desirable skills and marketability. A key expectation of the industry from their new cadre is a speedy integration into the business environment resulting in productive work. This usually requires having a sound technological background, a maturity to assess the environment and adapt quickly, and highly-developed soft skills to be productive in a team environment. Incorporating such experience and skills into a CS/IT curriculum is challenging and is still in its infancy stages. We undertook such as an endeavor in integrating .NET into the IT curriculum. Microsoft's .NET platform is becoming increasingly popular in the industry. Incorporating .NET into the undergraduate IT curriculum provides a plethora of skills and increases the employability of our graduates. We integrated .NET without a major revision to the existing curriculum by introducing an optional course in the final year (senior-level) of the IT undergraduate program. In addition to the .NET platform, the course covered the Java platform, which is similar in architecture to .NET. The course emulated an industry-based environment with real-world based assignments, focused on deliverables, used state-of-art IDEs and documentation, and pair programming to create a highly productive environment. The “soft skills” were integrated into the course with a project that implemented a virtual marketplace. Students in groups played different entities in the virtual marketplace and communicated with each other via Web Services. The project provided a virtual business environment and exposure to teamwork, collaboration, competition, negotiating, and creativity skills. Our first offering of the course in semester 1, 2005, attracted 128 students. The course created a highly productive environment throughout the semester. Students completed 7 assignments and the project within the 14-week semester. The initial results are encouraging and provide many insights to CS/IT departments planning to incorporate such courses.

An Interactive Programming Assistance tool (iPAT) for instructors and novice programmers
    (IEEE, 2013-04-26) Amaratunga, M; Wickramasinghe, G; Deepal, M; Perera, O; De Silva, D; Rajapakse, S. K
This paper describes an Interactive Programming Assistance tool (iPAT) which is designed to assist students in solving introductory programming problems and help instructors in conducting programming lab sessions effectively. In a large computer lab setting with over 30 students, communication can be very limited between the students and the lab instructors. To address this problem iPAT was developed. It allows students to undertake programming exercises and receive interactive guidance in getting their programs to compile and run. This is the only tool developed to assist students and instructors in solving their practical lab session problems, which comes with features such as error handling, remote access, handling PC inventory and a solution archive to solve common errors in C# programming. To ensure the accuracy of the system, it was deployed in a LAN network of twenty computers which gave the idea of virtual lab environment. Then eighteen undergraduates were asked to rank the usefulness of the system based on a five point scale. According to the provided rankings an average rating of 4.3 was obtained.

Relationship Between Sleep Quality and Perceived Stress among Undergraduates of a Selected Nonstate Sector Higher Education Institute in Sri Lanka
(School of Nursing, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2025-10-10) Anthony, K; Wijedasa, H; Samarasinghe, C; Gunawardhana, S; Wanigasinghe, H; De Silva, D
Sleep is a fundamental determinant of health, and good sleep quality is positively linked to overall wellbeing. Stress, as a physiological response, can adversely affect health when experienced at high or prolonged levels. Due to various reasons, undergraduates often have poor sleep quality and a high level of stress. Therefore, it is important to assess the relationship between sleep quality and perceived stress level among undergraduate students in Sri Lanka. This study was conducted to assess the relationship between perceived stress and sleep quality among undergraduates in a selected non-state sector higher educational institute in the country.

    Sinhala to english language translator
    (IEEE, 2008-12-12) De Silva, D; Alahakoon, A; Udayangani, I; Kumara, V; Kolonnage, D; Perera, H; Thelijjagoda, S
This paper describes a machine translation system that is capable of translating a grammatically correct Sinhala sentence in to its corresponding English sentence. This is the first Sinhala to English machine translation system, which comes with features such as an inbuilt keyboard, an inbuilt dictionary, an integrated word processor based on Unicode fonts, a grammar tool, a Sinhalese grammar checker, an add word tool, and a debugging tool. With the expansion of the world, English has become an important language that people should learn, as the majority of the worldwide population understand and carry out their day-to-day work in English. In addressing this need, we thought of taking up the challenge of building, a Sinhala to English language translator. To build this system, we used the transfer-based machine translation approach, which is a rule-based approach. At present, the system has achieved a success rate of 75% with a corpus of 150 sentences.

Smart wearables collect and securitize data, and in some cases, make intelligent decisions and respond to the user. "IOT based motion, health and fitness monitoring system for laborers in indoor and outdoor environments" is a concept that has been developed in order to ensure the safety of employees in their working environments. The key objective is to provide the employees with a SMART device that can monitor many of their vital bodily functionalities such as the pulse rate, oxygen in blood concentration and body temperature and thereby rectifying any potential risk or danger to any significant employee. Monitoring the motion of the limbs of each individual employee and analyzing the postural changes, degree of motion and thereby constantly keeping in track about the movements of employees is another major functionality that is proposed to be discussed under the research paper. Gaseous concentration around the working area has been another major aspect that have been taken into consideration through this study, toxic gas content levels according to the age limits that will affect each individual has been taken into note when developing the afore mentioned wearable device. Monitoring the location of the employees both online and offline will be much more convenient to track the working areas of each individual and also it will also be a great support if a certain employee faces any kind of accidental situation. Similarly, locating the working areas of a certain individual when they are offline is a novel concept has been developed in order to obtain the step count utilizing the aid of the motion detection algorithm.
