Publication Embargo Analyzing transport layer protocols to create an API to satisfy timed response in dynamic requirements of wireless networks(IEEE, 2014-12-11) De Silva, D. H; Ahamed Ishak, M. M; De Silva, G. C. M; Suranjith, A. V. S; Herath, H. M. H. SIn modern systems it is very vital to have an efficient data transmission mechanism. This becomes more critical factor when it is involved with a system like a way finding application for vision impaired people or a medical system that notifies the doctor's smartphone when the patient's heart rate goes down. The size of the data that is used frequently by the mentioned systems is relatively small. Additionally it might take more time for connection establishment despite of the requirement of urgency. Thus this kind of data transmission is not ideal for such systems. Therefore this diversity of data transmission makes a special category of systems that needs a reliable, efficient data transfer mechanism since requirements of those systems such as low latency, reliability are not being fully satisfied by the current Transport Layer Protocol (TLP) selection mechanism.Publication Embargo An Enhanced Multifunctional Transport Layer Protocol for Heterogeneous Data in Wireless Communication(IEEE, 2020-11) De Silva, D. H; Dewage, R; Guruge, T; Rajapaksha, V; Kulasooriya, V; Wijesekara, LIt is exciting to see that the applicability of smart devices has drastically boosted compared to many other electronic devices during the last decade. Although the usage of those devices is evolving, the kinds of data behaviors they produce are also rising. Nevertheless, when using existing transport layer protocols to support different data behaviors, the devices are having difficulties in applying a single protocol for each data transferring requirement in a wireless environment. The proposed solution for the problem is to develop an Enhanced Multifunctional Transport Layer Protocol which is EMTP for heterogeneous data transferring in wireless communication. The protocol identifies the data transfer behavior and utilizes the characteristics of the transport layer like improving reliability, latency, weaknesses in congestion control, and problems in resiliency.Publication Embargo An investigation into dynamic TLPs for smartphone communication: To facilitate timed response in way finding for vision impaired people(IEEE, 2013-12-11) De Silva, D. H; Murray, IA reliable, high speed and efficient data transfer method is a very important factor in real time Way-finding systems since it requires information with very low latency to discover paths, avoid dangerous situations, identified changes in existing maps and alternative routes. This research will develop models and methods to facilitate bounded timing with minimal latency for way-finding application for vision impaired people. As a result of analyzing the requirements for Way-finding applications, it was noted that some typical behaviours involve relatively small amount of data transfer through networks. Existing Transport Layer Protocols (TLP) are not ideal for providing such requirements. This research investigates existing TLPs and proposes modifications / extensions to facilitate demands in Way-finding applications and will implement the Dynamic TLP to incorporate both reliable data transfers with high efficiency as well as frequent data transfers which do not require reliability.Publication Embargo Machine Learning to Aid in the Process of Disease Detection and Management in Soilless Farming(IEEE, 2022-07-18) Fernando, S. D; Gamage, A; De Silva, D. HThis research aims at enhancing the methods and techniques that are being used in disease detection when it comes to soilless farming. Soilless farming is quite famous among the Sri Lankan farmers farming in urban areas. A mobile application is launched by us and this application is capable of identifying diseases in plants, therefore, farmers do not have to rely on their years of experience to identify the diseases. A novice farmer may struggle to say what is wrong with their plants, while another farmer with many years of experience may say what the disease is with no hesitation. Both those types of farmers benefit from our mobile application equally. The said mobile application consists of four components and each of them focuses on a different service. One of those components is to detect and manage diseases in plant leaves and that component is what this research paper showcases. This particular component allows the user to capture live-images of plant leaves. Then the application processes the captured image to identify if the plant is suffering from a disease. After that, it generates a report with a set of treatments. It further analyses and alerts the user if this disease detected is going to affect the harvest.Publication Embargo Quantification of machine effectiveness in building and construction industry(IEEE, 2018-02-08) Weerasinghe, H. M; De Silva, D. HBuilding and Construction industry highly depends on different kinds of heavy machines and machinery vehicles when it comes to performing different construction tasks. Since the current industry is not heavily concerned about measuring the effectiveness of machines, a considerable amount of budget is wasted due to the misuse of machines. Hence, there should be a proper method to monitor their effectiveness and to eradicate their misuse. Effectiveness can be achieved by analyzing the matrices, Availability, Performance, and Quality. Availability measurements can be acquired by analyzing the machine's on/off times and also the idle times, and by introducing a GPS and sensor equipped tracking device, the availability of machines can be tracked. The device is capable of acquiring the geographical location and the on/off state of the machine. Performance can be acquired by analyzing the task and the details of the machine. Excavating, Digging, Scraping, Spreading, and Loading are some of the construction activities and different machines are used for different purposes. This paper reports on a reliable way of calculating the performance by using specially designed algorithms for each type of machine. The algorithm uses a data driven questionnaire for each and every machinery vehicle to evaluate the quality factor. Each question has a weightage value where questions can be rated based on the value. By analyzing and calculating the outputs of availability, performance and quality factors, the system is able to calculate the effectiveness of the machine.Publication Embargo Real-time interactive voice communication-For a mute person in Sinhala (RTIVC)(IEEE, 2013-04-26) Amarasekara, M. S; Bandara, K. M. N. S; Vithana, B. V. A. I; De Silva, D. H; Jayakody, AImagine with the dawn of the new technologies of this world, what if the next is enabling a mute to speak? How can a mute person verbally communicate via a phone? The primary objective of the Real-time interactive voice communication system is to enable a mute to communicate verbally via a smart phone. Simple and user friendly methodologies were used for the implementation of this system. The user inputs a word composed in English to the system via the mobile phone's GUI and it will be transliterated to Sinhala Unicode characters and the system will convert the text to a Sinh ala male or female synthesized voice clip and transfer it to the on-going call. Therefore the person who is in the other end will not be aware that he/she is communicating with a mute person. The purpose of this paper is to present a briefing of the development, planning and implementation methodologies that was undertaken to implement the Real-time Interactive Voice Communication for a mute person in Sinhala.
