Publication Open Access Effect of Online Learning Environment on Behavioral Changes and Academic Performance of Children in Pre – Adolescence(School of Education, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, SLIIT, 2025-10-10) Mudalige, C.M.; Samaraweera, S.G.S.; Priyanath, H.M.S.The evolution of education paradigms in the new millennium has been influenced by the rapid integration of technology in learning environment worldwide, with Sri Lanka being a notable e x c e p t i o n until recent times. The global pandemic triggered an unprecedented shift in Sri Lanka’s educational landscape demanding a rapid transition from traditional classroom learning environment to online learning environment in 2020 as a resolution to the island-wide lockdown process. Very little was known about its effectiveness and challenges, although the process has become widely popular and mandatory in the system of education in the country. This paper aims to explore the impact of online learning environment on behavioral changes and the academic development of children in pre -adolescence. A survey questionnaire was administered to 120 participants studying in the Badulla educational zone to collectdata related to the study. The study adopted a subjective approach and analyzed quantitative measures of academic performance using Partial Least Square - Structural Equation Modelling (PLS - SEM) among pre -adolescent students engaged in an online learning environment. Findings of the study suggested that the online learning environment has a positive impact on both behavioral changes and the academicperformance of pre-adolescent students. The process has been empirically evaluated as an effective strategy for both learners and teachers to enhance their knowledge and skills in accomplishing intended academic goals in the new millennium. The study also demonstrated that the process fosters learner autonomy and motivates them to be authentically engaged in academic activities even though it bringschallenges in social interaction and emotional well-being. These insights underscore the significance of educators and policy makers to design online curricula that not only promote academic achievement but also nurture the holistic development of pre-adolescent children during their critical formative stage.Publication Embargo ONLINE LEARNING DURING COVID-19: THE IMPACT ON SATISFACTION AND COMMITMENT OF LEARNERS(SLIIT Business School, 2019-12-10) Ranadewa, D.U.N.; Gregory, T.Y.; Boralugoda, D.N.; Silva, J.A.H.T.; Jayasuriya, N.A.The deadly Covid virus has impacted education across the world to temporarily close the educational institutes and shift towards online learning methods (Dhawan, 2020). The educational system in Sri Lanka usually follows the traditional method of in-class learning. Due to the fast-spreading Covid-19 and the government rule imposed on social distancing, the universities across the country facilitated the online delivery of lectures through their learning management systems (Hayashi et al., 2020). Due to this shift, the learners faced several consequences regarding academics, accessibility, and lecturers' commitment. Referring to empirical studies, the study points out how those consequences impacted students' satisfaction and commitment worldwide. Limited empirical studies have been conducted to test the online learning efficiency with regards to learner satisfaction and commitment. Hence, the study aims to investigate whether there is a significant impact between those consequences and students' satisfaction and commitment in the Sri Lankan context. The target population included undergraduates in state and non-state universities in Sri Lanka. The sample size was 384, and the method applied was purposive sampling. The Googleform questionnaire was distributed among the sample, and the results were analysed quantitatively using SPSS and AMOS software, following the multiple linear regression method. The results demonstrate that the academic issues, accessibility issues have a significant negative impact, and lecturer commitment has a significant positive impact on learner satisfaction, and learner satisfaction has a significant negative impact on the learner commitment, proving that learners are less satisfied and less committed to online learning. Considering the originality, this is one of the pioneer studies conducted to identify the impact of online learning on the satisfaction and commitment of Sri Lankan undergraduates during the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings would be favourable for the learners, lecturers, future researchers, universities, and other educational institutes in making solutions to enhance learner satisfaction and commitment.Publication Embargo MOOCs Recommender Based on User Preference and Video Quality(2020 2nd International Conference on Advancements in Computing (ICAC), SLIIT, 2020-12-10) Sankalpa, R.; Sankalpani, T.; Sandeepani, T.; Ransika, N.; Kodagoda, N.; Suriyawansa, K.MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are a new revolution in the field of e-learning. MOOCs are capable of providing several thousands of learners with access to courses over the internet. MOOCs are produced in many different video production styles and these styles play an important role in helping the consumer stay engaged and interested in the courses. MOOCs provide a large number of courses in different domains to a wide range of learners. It has become difficult and a timeconsuming task for a user to find the most suitable courses that suit a learner’s personal preferences. This paper describes how to recommend a course based on the preferred video style of the learner and the basic learning style of the learner which determines the learner’s preferences on other materials in a course. In the course recommendation process, this paper also describes how to classify the course in order to recommend the most appropriate massive open online courses for users according to their most preferred video production style.Publication Embargo The Perceptions of University Students on Virtual Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences,SLIIT, 2021-09-25) Samarasinghe, T. D; Sellahewa, W. N; Samarasinghe, N. KThe current technological developments permit engagement of numerous ways to design online content. It is crucial to consider the favorites and perceptions of learners while designing the online developments to make the learning effective and efficient. Preference of the learner is related to the readiness or preparedness ss of the student to take part in two-way learning and the causes prompting the readiness for virtual learning. The term ‘perception’ in this study highlights various views and concerns of university students on online learning. Hence, the objective of this study is to investigate the perception on e-learning among university students in Sri Lanka using both undergraduate and Postgraduate students from the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL). Primary data were gathered by distributing a well-structured questionnaire which comprised both open-ended and closed-ended questions. Around 175 questionnaires were sent to both undergraduate students and postgraduate students who are following various courses in SUSL with the help of email and social media platforms and gathered 125 responses that can be used for this study. Convenience sampling techniques have been used to select the sample and gathered data have been analyzed qualitatively following thematic analysis. As the result different perspectives on online learning have been investigated and presented descriptively. This study is relevant for the academics as it facilitates them in gaining an understanding of the university students’ opinions towards online learning in this pandemic situation. Recommended strategies will also be beneficial for academics to make the online sessions effective and interactive.Publication Embargo Students' Involvement in Online Learning in the Context of Covid-19: A Case Study of University Undergraduates(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences,SLIIT, 2021-09-25) Rathnayaka, R. M. M. P; Herath, H. M. I. S. KThe Covid-19 epidemic had a massive impact on education. As a result of this, students began and continue to rely on online teaching and learning. This study employs a psychometric approach to assess students' involvement in online learning. Data was obtained from a survey of 97 randomly selected undergraduates, representing the first year and second year of a public university. With the help of prior scales, a four-dimensional psychometric scale was created. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was employed to evaluate the validity of the measurement model, and the results confirmed the validity of the model. The scale was loaded as an aggregate of physical, sentimental, intellectual, and agentic involvement. The research sample had an overall moderate degree of engagement in online learning with an average level that is not adequate yet could improve. Even though students are accountable for their learning, tension and anxiety may arise due to striving to keep up with their education and stay motivated and involved in online learning. Also, students' involvement levels varied significantly (p < 0.05) depending on the academic year and degree program and insignificant with network bandwidth, device use, and internet connection type. This result predicts the positive possibility to continue online learning under the Covid-19 pandemic even with fewer resources but with some behavioral changes. Finally, these findings and evaluations will aid policymakers and decision-makers in identifying various groups of students who will require attention to increase their level of participation in online learning.
