Exploring the Kelson’s Pure Theory of Law beyond the Philosophical Value
(School of Law, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, 2025-10-10) Kodithuwakku, K N K R
Jurisprudence is the philosophy of the law, which delivers an interesting narrative by analyzing law from different perspectives. As far as positivism is concerned, this is one of the luminescent schools of jurisprudence among other ideologies. German Positivism ideas differ from the British Positivism since it neither considers ethics nor facts. Kelson is one of the frontline scholars who introduced the Pure Theory of Law by enriching the Jurisprudence widely, while influencing other scholars to contribute to the legal system. Even though this eminent philosophy fattened the Jurisprudence, still there are some existing conundrums which did not fathomed by the Kelson. This paper intends to discuss the nature of the pure theory while focusing on the effectiveness and validity of Kelson’s basic norm with the separability thesis to identify the practical issues for better application.

Perceptions of Third-Year TESL Undergraduates on Kahoot as a Gamified Learning Tool in Sri Lanka
(SLIIT City UNI, 2025-07-08) Wijayarathna, T
The rapid and increased technology integration becomes an important position, especially in the language learning context. Kahoot, as a gamification tool, is implemented in English Language learning classrooms. The application of this gamified element is examined in various educational contexts and becomes widespread in higher education due to its significance. Nevertheless, only few studies regarding students’ perceptions towards the use of Kahoot among teaching English as a Second Language undergraduates were reported. Therefore, this present study investigates third-year TESL undergraduates’ perceptions towards utilising Kahoot in enhancing their English Language skills within their semesters. This research project examines how a focus group of five third-year undergraduates, currently studying at the department of English Language Teaching, University of Kelaniya, has perceived Kahoot as a gamified tool to enhance their learning. Semi-structured interviewing was used as the data collection instrument, where five interviews were conducted in total, with each interview lasting approximately thirty minutes. The collected data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. The findings of the study provide evidence for the presence of a number of unique perceptions among the interviewed participants. They emphasized that the implementation of Kahoot becomes more effective for their learning, while they overcome a few challenges with the use of Kahoot as a gamified tool. Furthermore, suggestions are discussed for the effective implementation of Kahoot. This study has already reiterated the need to explore this research area further because the studies are very limited. There should be further studies for ESL (English as a Second Language) development. In conclusion, the research has the potential to promote social change by emphasizing the importance of using Kahoot as a gamified element in pedagogy in Sri Lankan universities.

On the effectiveness of using machine learning and Gaussian plume model for plant disease dispersion prediction and simulation
    (IEEE, 2019-12-05) Miriyagalla, R; Samarawickrama, Y; Rathnaweera, D; Liyanage, L; Kasthurirathna, D; Nawinna, D; Wijekoon, J. L
Agriculture plays a vital role in the economic development of the entire world. Similarly, in Sri Lanka, 6.9% of the national GDP is contributed by the agricultural sector and more than 25% of Sri Lankans are employed in the field of agriculture. But the frequent fluctuations of climate conditions have caused the spread of diseases such as late blight which eventually has led to the devastation of entire plantations of Sri Lankans. To this end, this paper proposes to forecast the possible dispersion pattern and assist the farmers in identifying the possibility of the disease getting dispersed to nearby crops to provide early warning. Eventually, it leads the farmers to take precautions to save the plants before reaching a critical stage. The yielded results show that the proposed method successfully performed disease diagnosis and disease progression level identification with 90-94 % accuracy and dispersion pattern analysis.

Effectiveness of L2 Grammar Videos: A Dialogue between Teachers and Learners
(Faculty of Humanities and Sciences - SLIIT, 2021-03-26) Kalinga, J.
Throughout the years it has been debated whether it is necessary to teach grammar, and what the most effective methods of teaching grammar are. This research addressed several aspects of using technology in the field of education such as technology in language learning, the video as a learning tool, and its relevance to grammar learning and the teacher’s role in a technology-driven classroom. The study examined the perspectives of the teachers and the students towards L2 (Second Language) grammar videos and the effectiveness of such videos through a mixed method: Embedded Experimental Model. The sample included 120 young adults aged 18 - 24 who studied at a private campus in Sri Lanka and two teachers. A major finding of the study is that the students expect their teachers to explain what is on the video while playing it or after the video in order to clarify their doubts and for improved understanding. Consequently, the teachers can use L2 grammar videos as a scaffolding tool. The statistical analysis proved that the experimental group scored more in the tests compared to the control group. Further, there is a discrepancy between the teachers’ perceptions on L2 grammar videos and the students’ preferred types of grammar videos.

A Systematic Review on the Effect of Music Therapy on Post-Operative Pain in Adult Patients
    (Faculty of Humanities and Sciences,SLIIT, 2021-09-25) Gangabadaarachchi, D. M; Wijedasa, P. H. S
The purpose of this systematic review is to identify the effect of music therapy on postoperative pain in adults through findings of critically appraised, selected literature. A systematic search of Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, and University of Liverpool John mores DISCOVER, Medline and Google Scholar was conducted using the key terms such as Effect, Effectiveness, Impact, Music therapy, Therapeutic Music, Post-Operative Pain , Post-Surgical Pain. Total number of 1177 records were identified through data base searching and forty three were selected following screening, Only twelve were eligible meeting inclusion criteria and total seven articles were finally selected after the critical appraising for methodological quality with using two tools. The findings of this systematic review indicated that music therapy was effective to reduce postoperative pain and analgesic consumptions in adults with significant positive effects to reduce post-operative analgesic consumptions, and postoperative blood pressure. Findings elaborated lead to emerge two main key themes: Music therapy is an effective intervention to reduce Post-Operative Pain reduction in adults, and music is an effective complementary therapy. All studies included in this systematic review highlighted that generally music therapy is not a standard procedure for reducing post-operative pain but as a complementary therapy that can be combined with standard pharmacological intervention.
