Voice from the Control Room : Government Officials' Perspectives on How Politics, Funding and Technology Shape Sri Lanka's Transport Future
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2025) Bandara, S; Perera, Y; Premathilaka, H; Wijethunga, J; Karunarathna, N; Dayapathirana, N
The daily struggles of Sri Lanka's public transpo rtation system affect millions of lives, yet the voices of those who run it often go unheard. This study spoke with eight senior government officials from the National Transport Commission and Ceylon Government Railways to uncover what happens behind the scenes. Through detailed interviews, three main problems weighing on their minds were identified: political interference disrupts their work, money shortages block necessary improvements, and finally, worker satisfaction has hit rock bottom. Many transport workers feel stuck with low wages and unclear career paths, which makes it hard to keep services running smoothly. However, it is not all about bad news. These officials shared smart ideas about fixing issues, from better resource management to innovative technology implementation that could help riders track their buses and trains. They believe Sri Lanka's public transport can improve with the right changes. This research study goes beyond just listing problems - we talked to people who live these challenges every day and know what needs to change. Their stories show that improving public transport is not just about new buses or trains; it is about supporting the people who keep everything moving, listening to what riders need, and Equipping transport workers with the required equipment to perform their jobs well.

Determine the Most Appropriate Public Transportation Modes to Travel at a Given Time by Considering the Time Schedules and Live Traffic
    (IEEE, 2018-10-04) Gamage, M. P. A. W; Aponso, A
Transportation is a need of a human being. Mainly transportation is divided into public and private transportation. However, most people prefer to use private transportation modes because it is easy to use. However, the usage of private vehicles is a reason for many problems. Some of the common problems are road traffic, environment pollution, increased fuel usage, increased cost of traveling and parking problems. There are some reasons, which discourage people from using public transportation. One of the reasons is that there is no proper method to find appropriate public transportation modes to travel. The appropriate transportation modes have to be decided by considering factors such as time schedules, road traffic, distance, cost and comfortability. It is difficult for people to find out transportation modes by considering all of these factors. This creates the need for an application, which gives suggestions of public transportation modes based on these factors. Based on the study, an application for suggesting appropriate transportation modes was implemented. As a prototype, this solution covers only the public transportation of Sri Lanka. There are few existing applications and past researches similar to the application, but there are few limitations in these existing applications. Mainly these applications have been developed not considering the road traffic as a factor that influences the modes of traveling, and they have not covered Sri Lanka yet.

Singlish Sentiment Analysis Based Rating For Public Transportation
    (IEEE, 2021-01-27) Sharounthan, B; Nawinna, D. P; De Silva, R
As the primary transportation mode in Sri Lanka, Public transportation is tightly attached with the daily life of the people. The important factor in transportation is providing a door to door mobility. This paper presents a study focused on measuring the service quality of public transportation based on the comments and feedbacks provided by the passengers with the aim of producing a better service for users. Comments were gained from social media and were used to produce a comprehensive rating mechanism to rate the transportation service providers. This tool was developed using natural language processing techniques using the data from the Sri Lankan context. With the popularity of Social Media in Sri Lanka, many people use Singlish (Sinhala written using English scripts) for online communication. The rating engine presented in this paper is capable of performing Sentiment analysis on comments given in Singlish Language in the Transportation domain.
