Publication Embargo Exploring the evolving landscape: Urban horticulture cropping systems–trends and challenges(Elsevier, 2024-03-01) Sashika, M.A.N; Gammanpila, H.W; Priyadarshani, S.V.G.N.Urban horticulture cropping systems offer a promising solution for food security and sustainable agriculture in rapidly urbanizing areas. This paper explores their evolving landscape, emphasizing trends and challenges shaping their development and impact on urban environments. Vertical farming, rooftop gardens, hydroponics, aeroponics, Internet of Things (IoT), integration of optimized space, resources, and year-round cultivation are considered as key trends in urban horticulture. These innovations reflect the growing interest in sustainable urban agriculture and technology's role in boosting productivity and resilience. However, urban horticulture faces challenges that demand attention. Limited space requires creative land-use solutions, while soil quality and contamination concerns necessitate remediation strategies for crop safety. Similarly, access to water is crucial, driving the adoption of water-saving technologies. The urban heat island effect poses another challenge, urging heat stress mitigation for crop health. Zoning and regulations play a vital role, requiring supportive policies and secure land tenure. High costs must be managed with innovative financial approaches to ensure urban farming's viability. Finally, public perception and awareness play a critical role. Advocacy, education, and community engagement are vital to dispel misconceptions, garner support, and encourage involvement in urban horticulture. Even with challenges, urban horticulture helps to provide food for the growing population, creates business opportunities, and contributes to a greener environment for sustainable development.Publication Embargo Smart Waste Segregation for Home Environment(IEEE, 2023-06-12) Abeygunawardhana, P.K. W; Muhammed Rijah, U.LThe segregation of waste and recycling is essential for effective waste management. Due to the busy schedule most of the people do not have a time to separate their waste. However, there is a significant issue with the segregation of the collected garbage. The implementation of an intelligent trash-management architecture is essential for the removal or reduction of waste and the maintenance of a clean, corporate environment. An IoT-stationed smart waste management device is proposed in this study that uses sensor devices to identify rubbish in the dustbins. With the aid of sensors, the waste substances in it will be separated through IoT as soon as it is discovered. Sensors and the IoT module are connected through a microcontroller. To detect the presence of garbage, an ultrasonic sensor is used. All garbage entered will be caught by the web camera and processed by the machine learning module once it has been processed. Using the model, we can identify the many forms of waste, such as paper, plastic, and glass, which account for most of the garbage materials found in a home area. This aids in removing the trash from the trash can in the most efficient and effective manner possible. This research presents an IoT, and Machine Learning based completely intelligent trash segregation and management System that recognizes the dustbins' wastes using sensor systems. This project aims to develop an automated waste segregation system using a CNN algorithm that will capture waste images from a camera with object detection and classify waste materials such as paper, plastic, and glass so that the waste can be recycled appropriately. The proposed architecture with CNN gives an accuracy of 84.67%. This system will help in garbage disposal by categorizing it, contributing to a cleaner environment.Publication Embargo An Approach of Enhancing the Quality of Public Transportation Service in Sri Lanka using IoT(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2022-10-15) Weligamage, H. D; Wijesekara, S. M; Chathwara, M.D.S.; Isuru Kavinda, H.G.; Amarasena, N; Gamage, NTraveling is one of the necessary and common behavior of any society. Thus, there are many ways of human travel. Due to the fact that Sri Lanka is still a developing country, the vast majority of the population rely on public transit as opposed to private transportation options. In this situation, public and private bus services are the most common means of transportation for people. People who use bus service for daily traveling face lot of issues due to the delays in bus arrivals, missing the bus or excessive crowd in the bus. This proposed system is intended to make bus travel more efficient and convenient for those who rely on buses as their primary means of public transit. This system provides a mobile application for passengers to utilize in order to observe the real-time position of the buses, as well as their anticipated arrival time, current passenger count, and a visualization of the available seat locations within the vehicle prior to the arrival of the bus. Besides, traditional manual ticketing procedure also cause many difficulties for the passengers like need of carrying changed money each time they travel. To avoid this serious problem, this system introduces a non-interactive automated ticketing system which has a smart card that can be tracked in a RFID zone and an automated fee calculating system using a logical conceptual algorithm considering environmental factors. Along with this a digital ticket is issued including all the required details of a journey. In addition to that, this system has a two-factor authentication process that makes use of face recognition to validate the user's identity before granting access to their smart card. The goal of this application is to provide a systematic solution for the typical challenges that public transportation users face in order to improve the service quality by using IoT-based technologies and image processing.Publication Embargo Children's Behavior Analysis Through Smart Toys(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022-11) Ramesha, M. G. T.; Rajapaksha, U. U. S.Due to the widespread use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in recent years, the need for IoT technologies to handle communications with the rest of the globe has grown dramatically. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play a vital role in the operation of the IoT. The creation of Internet of Things operating systems (OS), which can handle the newly constructed IoT hardware, as well as new protocols and procedures for all communication levels, all of which are now in development, will pave the way for the future. When compared to other devices, these gadgets require a comparatively little amount of electricity, memory, and other resources. This has caused the scientific community to become more aware of the relevance of IoT device operating systems as a result of their findings. These devices may be made more versatile and powerful by including an operating system that contains real-time capabilities, kernel, networking, and other features, among other things. IEEE 802.15.4 networks are linked together using IPv6, which has a wide address space and so enables more devices to connect to the internet using the 6LoWPAN protocol. It is necessary to address some privacy and security issues that have arisen as a result of the widespread use of the Internet, notwithstanding the great benefits that have resulted. For the Internet of Things operating systems, this research has provided a network security architecture that ensures secure communication by utilizing the Cooja network simulator in combination with the Contiki operating system and demonstrate and explained how the nodes can protect from the network layer and physical layer attacks. Also, this research has depicted the energy consumption results of each designated node type during the authentication and communication process. Finally, proposed a few further improvements for the architecture which will enhance the network layer protection.Publication Embargo Location based garbage management system with iot for smart city(IEEE, 2018-08-08) Lokuliyana, S; Jayakody, A; Dabarera, G. S. B; Ranaweera, R. K. R; Perera, P. G. D. M; Panangala, P. A. D. V. RSmart cities integrate multiple ICT and IOT solutions to build a comfortable human habitation. One of these solutions is to provide an environmentally friendly, efficient and effective garbage management system. The current garbage collection system includes routine garbage trucks doing rounds daily or weekly, which not only doesn't cover every zone of the city but is a completely inefficient use of government resources. This paper proposes a cost-effective IOT based system for the government to utilize available resources to efficiently manage the overwhelming amounts of garbage collected each day, while also providing a better solution for the inconvenience of garbage disposal for the citizens. This is done by a network of smart bins which integrates cloud-based techniques to monitor and analyze data collected to provide predictive routes generated through algorithms for garbage trucks. An android app is developed for the workforce and the citizens, which primarily provides the generated routes for the workforce and finds the nearest available smart bin for citizens.Publication Embargo An Integrated Framework for Predicting Health Based on Sensor Data Using Machine Learning(2020 2nd International Conference on Advancements in Computing (ICAC), SLIIT, 2020-12-10) Jayaweera, K.N.; Kallora, K.M.C.; Subasinghe, N.A.C.K.; Rupasinghe, L.; Liyanapathirana, C.According to recent studies, the majority of the world's population shows a lack of concern in their health. As a consequence, the non-communicable disease rate has increased dramatically. Amongst these diseases, heart diseases have caused the most catastrophic situations. Apart from the busy lifestyle, studies also show that stress is another factor that causes these diseases. Therefore, the focus of our research is to provide a user-friendly health monitoring system that causes minimum disturbance to its users. However, many studies have focused on predicting health; very few have focused on its usability. The objective of our research is to predict the possibility of cardiac arrests and the presence of stress in real-time using a wearable device prototype. The system uses biometric signals obtained from the photoplethysmogram sensor embedded in the wearable device to perform real-time predictions. We trained three models using random forest, k-nearest neighbor, and logistic regression classification algorithms to predict sudden cardiac arrests with accuracies 99.93%, 99.10%, and 94.47%, respectively. Further, we trained three additional models to predict stress using the same algorithms with accuracies 99.87%, 96.83%, and 65.00%, respectively. Thus, the results of this study show that an integrated framework, capable of predicting different health-related conditions, through sensor data collected from wearable sensors, is feasible.Publication Embargo Dogodo: IoT Based Mobile Application to Provide Essential Health Services to Dogs(2021 3rd International Conference on Advancements in Computing (ICAC), SLIIT, 2021-12-09) Thilakarathne, L.V.I.S.; Salay, M.S.; Wijethilaka, M.G.R.; Fernando, T.S.C.; Sriyaratna, D.; Rupasinghe, S.Voice of dogs can be heard by people who listen to them.
