An Online Dashboard Platform for Weather Data of Major Sri Lankan Cities, and Global Climate Trends
    (IEEE, 2022-12-08) Pemasinghe, S; Dayarathna, D; Panditharathna, P M R A; Saparamadu, S; Wickramarathne, J
Having easy access to vital weather information and latest climate trends can be of utmost use for a myriad of stakeholders specially for sectors such as fishing community and the agricultural sector. In this paper we have mainly focused on major Sri Lankan cities and providing a one-stop station for easily accessing useful weather information for all the major Sri Lankan cities scattered over 25 administrative districts via a series of dedicated dashboards for each of the cities. The parameters that are displayed in the dashboards have been decided via surveys covering major stakeholders. Steps have been taken to disseminate not only the weather information but also information about latest climate trends regarding stratospheric ozone concentration and global land and ocean temperature anomalies, and providing all this information in one place with a lot of potential to extend the breadth of information provided in terms of weather and climate changes in the years to come.

Energy and Operations Optimization for Effective Greenhouse Management
    (IEEE, 2022-12-09) Prihan Nimsara, K. I.; Bodaragama, J.; Roshan Maduwantha, K. A.; Fernando, S. D.
IoT technology-based process automation that can be applied to a greenhouse leads to making condition management and status monitoring more robust while leading to saving energy and resources. The proposed system which is based on IoT technology and MQTT protocol can set optimal growth conditions for plant and seed growth within the greenhouse. The sensor-based inputs are to be transformed into the processed values based on the defined logic and the standard benchmarks gathered from the local agricultural authorities. The key areas of condition monitoring to be done via temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and lighting can ultimately yield an increased harvest having supported both the plant and seeds-based implementations for multiple types of plants. One of the most important factors to consider is that the farmers can have energy savings through the proposed solution by controlling the actuators in an optimal manner and reducing manual intervention by a considerable amount. The excess usage of electricity by lights and cooling fan usage in the greenhouse can be controlled with real-time data tracking and better analytics. The use of water can be properly maintained for the plants by putting only the required amount will make the soil wet and spraying the required amount to air will make better humidity control. Thus, the real-time condition-based controlling of the actuators leads to making the greenhouse operations more optimal and better utilization of resources and energy which ultimately results in financial benefits for the greenhouse owner. Based on the evaluated power consumption of the greenhouse power usage before and after the system was installed, the newly introduced system can save energy by having optimal control of actuators by performing algorithmic calculations to meet only the required level of weather conditions. This is to be proven experimentally by implementing the proposed system for a defined period of time under the monitoring of energy usage.

COVID-19 Infection Risk Assessment for Shoppers in Retail Stores
    (IEEE, 2022-12-26) Rathnayake, B. R. M. S. R. B.; Senadheera, R.I.A.; Ranasinghe, R.A.K.H.; Sameer, U.M.; Wickramarathne, J
Over the last few years, a large number of smartphone apps have been developed to “flatten the curve” of the rising number of COVID-19 infections. Knowledge of potential symptoms and their distribution enables the early identification of infected individuals. We developed a mobile app-based crowdsourcing methodology to assess the COVID-19 infection risk through shopping habits at indoor retail stores. The app’s goal is to instil trust in customers to visit stores, which will assist small and medium businesses to survive their operations in the near term. According to the literature, there are several implementations for COVID-19 infection risk estimations for such scenarios. A mobile app prototype was developed, and the risk was calculated using the COVID-19 Aerosol Transmission Estimator model established by the University of Colorado Boulder. The developed prototype mobile app was tested with end users to gather their feedback through a questionnaire. In comparison to the complex implementation associated with AI-based alternatives, this solution could be delivered at a lower cost with adequate accuracy of COVID-19 infection risk assessments.

Cyber Forensics Tools: A Review on Mechanism and Emerging Challenges
    (IEEE, 2021-05-18) Fernando, V
With the development of technology, "Data", also interpreted as "Information" has become a major role played in the field of Cyber Forensics. One of the most crucial incidents which needs data to be important is, when it is taken as evidence in cyber-crimes. These crimes can be occurring in the fields of digital media and network in many instances related to crime scenes. Crime and forensic both investigators need the help of digital forensics to investigate in order to identify, whether the victim has committed a crime or not. Therefore, it is a requirement for an investigator to use a suitable, accurate, affordable and a reliable cyber forensic tool for the forensics investigations conducted with respect to crimes. Many researchers have done experiments on different functionalities, a forensic tool should have and have come up with various tools specifically for each branch in cyber forensics. Furthermore, with time, these cyber forensic tools have been identified with drawbacks due to the invasion of crimes, especially related to the sophisticated technology expansion. Therefore, the acquiring process of forensics tools is in lack of advanced features to detect evidence. This paper describes on some timely Digital Forensics tools and discusses emerging challenges in advanced areas of Digital Forensics.
