Beyond Internet Dependency: LoRa for Post- Earthquake Structural Monitoring
(Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, 2026-05-21) Rallapudi, M.O; Vautier, A; Ngan, B; Perera, P; Prasanna, R
Acquiring structural response data during and after earthquakes is essential for assessing threats to critical infrastructure; however, conventional transmission systems rely on Internet connectivity that is often disrupted during major seismic events. This study evaluates Long Range (LoRa) radio as a low-power, infrastructure-independent alternative for transmitting building instrumentation data when conventional networks fail. Field experiments were conducted across three New Zealand cities, testing performance under varying radio configurations, elevations, and urban topographies. Results demonstrate reliable urban communication ranges of up to 1.6 km under optimal settings. Elevation was the dominant deployment factor, with packet delivery ratios (PDR) improving from 0–40% at ground level to near-100% at 500 m radial distance when transmitters were positioned on upper floors. Building-to-building links achieved 75–100% PDR with received signal strength values between −55 and −110 dBm, while terrain features such as hills and dense vegetation caused significant attenuation and occasional link failure at shorter distances. These findings confirm the feasibility of LoRa for post-earthquake structural monitoring and provide quantitative guidance for elevation-aware, terrain-conscious deployment in urban environments.

An Enhanced Multifunctional Transport Layer Protocol for Heterogeneous Data in Wireless Communication
    (IEEE, 2020-11) De Silva, D. H; Dewage, R; Guruge, T; Rajapaksha, V; Kulasooriya, V; Wijesekara, L
It is exciting to see that the applicability of smart devices has drastically boosted compared to many other electronic devices during the last decade. Although the usage of those devices is evolving, the kinds of data behaviors they produce are also rising. Nevertheless, when using existing transport layer protocols to support different data behaviors, the devices are having difficulties in applying a single protocol for each data transferring requirement in a wireless environment. The proposed solution for the problem is to develop an Enhanced Multifunctional Transport Layer Protocol which is EMTP for heterogeneous data transferring in wireless communication. The protocol identifies the data transfer behavior and utilizes the characteristics of the transport layer like improving reliability, latency, weaknesses in congestion control, and problems in resiliency.

Performance test of IEEE 802.11 ac wireless devices
    (IEEE, 2015-01-08) Narayan, S; Jayawardena, C; Wang, J; Ma, W; Geetu, G
With the wireless technologies being widely used, it is for sure that all types of wireless networking will become more and more popular now and in the near future. Therefore, measurement-based performance evaluation of different wireless network standards and traffics is becoming very important. In this research paper, the wireless local area network performance differences between IEEE 802.11n and IEEE 802.11ac technologies of both IPv4 and IPv6 on two Windows 7 operating system computers which been implemented 802.11ac network devices is investigated. The results indicated that both IPv4 and IPv6 802.11ac throughput is higher than 802.11n, both ac and n IPv6 mode has lower jitter than IPv4's. The delay and drop rate metrics were also be measured.
